So Michael Phelps has announced the REAL reason he is coming out of retirement. Is it because he misses the cut and thrust of competition? Or maybe it’s because he’s bored and fed up of playing golf and wants to enjoy a proper sport again – instead of one that spoils a good walk.
No, it’s neither of those reasons. It’s because he’s FAT. Now when I put weight on I normally resolve to cut down on the beer or do a little bit more exercise. Not bid for Olympic glory in Rio in a couple of years time. But then I’ve never been an Olympic champion. Apparently when he raced in London in 2012 Phelps was 85Kg, but he ballooned to 102Kg when he entered swimming retirement, presumably from not having to train several hours a day.
Phelps makes his comeback today in the 100m Butterfly at the Mesa Grand Prix in Arizona and I really wish him well (after all he’s only 28). I’m sure it won’t turn out to be the comeback disaster of troubled Australian Olympian Ian Thorpe, but I think he’ll struggle to get anywhere near even his 2012 form. We’ll see.
