Looking forward to hooking up with Mark Foster at London Fields Lido for the British Gas Swim Britain event a week on Sunday (September 29). Mark, who is a SwimBritain ambassador and former Olympian specialising in 50m Freestyle and Butterfly will be on hand at the challenge – hopefully giving hints and tips about how to swim much better and faster.
We’ve entered two teams: one for Goggleblog and one for Mark’s old club in North London, Barnet Copthall SC. Mums and Dads will be competing against their swimming children who all train several times a week at Barnet Copthall and compete for the club. And although us adults all like to think of ourselves as relatively sporty, the truth is that we really have our work cut out against the younger generation of swimming superstars!
Developed to encourage 500,000 more people to swim regularly by 2015, the Swim Britain event is part of a series that are being held across the UK (see list below). It’s also the first-ever team relay event designed to get Brits back in the water. Competitors have to swim four 250m laps around a circuit of the 50m Lido, the equivalent of 40 lengths of a standard 25m pool.
Other challenges include Little SwimBritain: a relay in 125m legs for families and children aged between 8 and 16. Then there’s SwimBritain DIY in which solo swimmers can also take on the challenge at their own local pool.
