British Pathe: Nylon swimming wigs and flowery caps!

I discovered British Pathe earlier in the week and am absolutely loving some of its old swimming footage.

As well as fantastic 60s shots of London Lidos and 1930s instructional videos showing you how to swim freestyle (before tumbleturns) there are also hidden gems, like this one from 1963.

I must confess to having something of an obsession with old swimming caps like these – reminiscent of Blur’s debut Leisure album.

But the Nylon drip-dry wig is beyond me. Why did anyone seriously think that ladies would be wearing these to cover their real hair while swimming?

Thanks to @speedoglobal for the tip off.
